Wyoming Cowboys (4-2)At Air Force Falcons (5-2)
Date & Time:
October 20, Saturday, 2:00 p.m.
The Air Force Falcons try to grind out another win this weekend
as they host the Wyoming Cowboys in a Mountain West Conference
showdown in Colorado Springs. Last weekend, the Falcons improved
to 2-0 in the month of October for the first time since 2002
with a commanding 45-21 triumph over Colorado State in Fort
Collins. The conference road triumph was also the first in
October for the Falcons since the team defeated Wyoming seven
years ago. Although the team is not in first place in the MWC
standings, its 4-1 start is the best-ever as a member of the
Mountain West and the best in league play since 1998 when the
academy played its final campaign as part of the Western
Athletic Conference.
As for the Cowboys, they had their
modest two-game win streak snapped and fell for just the second
time in 2007 last Saturday when the squad bowed to New Mexico at
home in a 20-3 outing that was delayed almost two hours due to
poor weather. With the loss, the Pokes are now tied with San
Diego State and UNM for third place in the MWC standings at 1-1.
In terms of the all- time series, the Falcons are clinging to a
22-20-3 advantage over
Wyoming heading into this meeting. Last season, the academy
posted a 31-24 victory in Laramie. As members of the MWC, the
programs have split the eight previous meetings, with three of
the last four games being decided by a touchdown or less.

Kansas Jayhawks (6-0)At Colorado Buffaloes (4-3)
Date & Time:
October 20, Saturday, 5:45 p.m.
For just the second time this season, the 15th-ranked Kansas
Jayhawks hit the road, as they travel to Boulder to take on the
Colorado Buffaloes in Big 12 play at Folsom Stadium. At a
perfect 6-0, the Jayhawks are one of six remaining unbeaten
teams at the FBS level, as they are off to their best start
since opening the 1995 season 7-0. Dating back to last season,
Kansas has won nine of its last 10 games and that includes a
convincing 58-10 triumph over Baylor last weekend. With that
win, the Jayhawks improved to 2-0 in league play, marking their
best start since posting the same record in 1997. Kansas,
already bowl eligible for the third straight year, now heads
away from home, having posted a 30-24 victory at Kansas State in
its lone road game this season.
As for Colorado, it played at
Kansas State last weekend, but it was on the short end of a
47-20 setback. The loss brought the team's three- game win
streak to a close and dropped it to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the
Big 12. The Buffaloes however, now return home, where they have
gone 3-1 this season and that includes a 27-24 upset of
nationally-ranked Oklahoma on September 29th. Colorado leads the
all-time series with Kansas, 41-22-3, but the Jayhawks snapped a
five-game losing streak to the Buffaloes with a 20-15 victory in
Lawrence last season.

Oregon Ducks (5-1)At Washington Huskies (2-4)
Date & Time:
October 20, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
The seventh-ranked Oregon Ducks are unbeaten on the road this
season and will attempt to remain that way, as they travel to
Seattle this weekend for a Pac-10 showdown with the Washington
Huskies. Mike Bellotti's Ducks are very much in the hunt for the
Pac-10 title. The team won its first four games of the season,
before falling at home to California on September 29th. After a
bye week, Oregon found its way back into the win column with a
53-7 rout of Washington State last weekend.
The Huskies are out of the
conference race, having lost four games in a row to fall to 2-4
on the season. Last week, it was nationally-ranked Arizona State
which got the better of UW in Tempe, 44-20. Washington leads the
all-time series by a count of 58-36-5. In fact,
Washington has more victories
against the Ducks than any other opponent for UO. The Ducks have
won three straight in the series.

(1-5) At East Carolina Pirates (4-3)
Date & Time:
October 20, Saturday, 4:30 p.m.
A
set of teams headed in completely different directions collide
in Greenville this Saturday, as the struggling NC State Wolfpack
tussle with the streaking East Carolina Pirates in
non-conference play. The Wolfpack have gotten off to a simply
dreadful start, winning just one of their first six games, with
that lone win coming over Football Championship Subdivision
member, Wofford (38-10) back on September 15th. Since that win,
NC State has dropped three consecutive games, including a 27-10
setback at Florida State in its most recent outing on October
6th. Dating back to last season, the Wolfpack have now dropped
12 straight game against Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly
1-A) schools.
As for ECU, it has overcome a slow
start by winning its last three games, including a 45-42
overtime decision at Texas-El Paso last weekend. With the win,
the Pirates moved over .500 (4-3) for the first time this
season, and they are now in search of their third home win in
four tries. In terms of the
all-time series, NC State owns a 14-10 lead over ECU, but the
Pirates have won five of the past seven meetings, including a
21-16 triumph in last season's encounter in Raleigh.

Boise
State Broncos (5-1)At Louisiana
Tech Bulldogs (2-4)
Date & Time:
October 20, Saturday, 7:00 p.m.
After taking part in the highest-scoring game in the history of
the Western Athletic Conference, the Boise State Broncos get
right back to business on Saturday night as they challenge the
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in league play at Aillet Stadium in
Ruston. On the blue turf in Idaho last Sunday, the Broncos were
in jeopardy of dropping their first WAC home game ever, but
leave it to BSU to provide some extra excitement for the
hometown fans as they slipped by Nevada in four overtimes by a
score of 69-67. The victory pushed Boise to 26-0 in WAC games
since joining the league and also 32 straight home conference
wins overall, not to mention victories in 18 of the last 19
games regardless of opponent or location. The win over the Wolf
Pack also pushed the Broncos closer to the national rankings
once again, after being dropped from the Top-25 following their
24-10 loss to Washington on the road the second week of the
season.
As for the Bulldogs, they finally
snapped a four-game slide last Saturday as they took out New
Mexico State in a thrilling 22-21 decision at home. The win was
just the second of the season for LaTech and the first against a
program from the Football Bowl Subdivision.
As far as the all-time series is
concerned, Boise State took a slight 5-4 advantage over the
Bulldogs with a commanding 55-14 thrashing of the visitors in
Idaho last year. The last win in the series for LaTech came at
home in 2001 in a 48-42 decision, leaving BSU to claim each of
the last five matchups.

Florida Gators (4-2)
At #8 Kentucky Wildcats
(6-1)
Date & Time:
October 20, Saturday, 3:30 p.m.
The 14th-ranked Florida Gators own a 20-game winning streak over
the Kentucky Wildcats, who have earned the eighth spot in the AP
poll after last weekend's huge victory over then top-ranked LSU.
For just the third time in the history of the series between
these SEC rivals, both teams enter the contest ranked. Florida
appeared to be a major national championship contender through
the first four games of this season, as all four resulted in
victory.
Unfortunately, the Gators dropped a
three-point decision to Auburn and a four- point decision to LSU
the next two weeks, seemingly crushing their hopes for a repeat
title. Urban Meyer's squad was idle last weekend, giving the
coaches and players time to prepare for a red-hot opponent this
weekend. Kentucky is flying high after last week's 43-37
triple-overtime win over LSU, the program's first victory over
a No. 1 team since 1964. The
triumph was significant because it came on the heels of the
'Cats first loss of the season, a 15-point setback at South
Carolina that ended with the Gamecocks' fans chanting
"overrated." Rich Brooks has turned around this Kentucky program
in a short time, and while the club is already bowl eligible at
6-1, the goal now is clearly an SEC title. Florida owns a
commanding 40-17 series edge over Kentucky.

(5-2)
Date & Time:
October 20, Saturday, 8:00 p.m.
The 24th-ranked Michigan Wolverines have turned around their
season, and they are set to do battle with the Illinois Fighting
Illini in Big Ten action. Since losing to Appalachian State and
Oregon in the first two games of the season, Michigan has
rallied for five consecutive wins. Last weekend, the Wolverines
improved to 3-0 in league play with a 48-21 romp over a strong
Purdue squad. There are many tests that lie ahead for Michigan,
but the team does control its own destiny in regard to a trip to
the Rose Bowl.
As for Illinois, it is coming off a
10-6 loss to Iowa on the road. That setback snapped a five-game
winning streak for the Illini, who failed in their attempt to
become bowl eligible for the first time since 2001 and were
knocked out of the national rankings. Michigan owns a commanding
65-21-2 series lead over Illinois, and the team's haven't met
since 2004.

New Mexico Lobos
(4-2) At San Diego State Aztecs (2-4)
Date & Time:
October 20, Saturday, 8:30 p.m.
Kicking off the first of a three-game homestand, the San Diego
State Aztecs welcome the New Mexico Lobos for a Mountain West
Conference showdown this weekend. The Aztecs have had their
issues this season, winning just twice in six tries thus far.
Unfortunately, even the victories have been less than impressive
with a triumph over Portland State and a beating of a winless
Colorado State program in Fort Collins a couple weeks ago. More
recently the team dropped into Salt Lake City and was turned
back in a 23-7 loss to Utah, evening their MWC record at 1-1,
which is where New Mexico stands heading into this week as well.
Like SDSU, the Lobos also have a
win over a program from the Football Championship Subdivision
(Sacramento State), but at least the team's other three
victories have come against quality opponents. Last Saturday,
UNM went into Laramie and treated the Cowboys to a rude 20-3
wake-up call, marking the team's fourth win in the last five
games. San Diego State leads the all-time series with the Lobos
by a count of 20-13, despite
losing last year's meeting, 41-14, in Albuquerque. The Aztecs
have gone 10-7 at home over the years in the series, but
recently UNM has had its way in the Golden State by winning five
straight on the road.

Baltimore Ravens
(4-2) At Buffalo Bills (1-4)
Date & Time:
October 21, Sunday, 1:00 p.m.
Willis McGahee left the Buffalo
Bills on less than pleasant terms this offseason. On Sunday,
he'll get the chance to prove his doubters wrong when the
Baltimore Ravens come to visit. The teams will meet at Ralph
Wilson Stadium for the first time after three matchups in
Baltimore, including a 19-7 win by the Ravens in last year's
regular-season finale that secured a first round bye. McGahee
was on the Bills' sideline that game, but following a March
trade, he's flourished with the Ravens (4-2).
The former
University of Miami star has rushed for 525 yards this season
and is averaging 113.2 yards from scrimmage - he finished last
season with Buffalo averaging only 3.8 yards per carry. McGahee
rushed for 3,365 yards and 24 touchdowns for Buffalo from
2003-06. After McGahee was dealt, the Bills (1-4) selected
Marshawn Lynch 12th overall, and he has 373 rushing yards to
rank second among rookies this season behind Minnesota's Adrian
Peterson.
Both the Ravens
and the Bills will go with backup quarterbacks on Sunday, making
the running games even more essential. After Kyle Boller led
Baltimore to a 22-3 win over St. Louis last Sunday in place of
the injured Steve McNair, Ravens coach Brian Billick named him
the starter for this game. McNair has a groin injury and sore
back and the team wants to give him three weeks to recover.
Baltimore has a bye next week before facing AFC North-leading
Pittsburgh. Boller is 2-0 this season filling in for McNair,
completing 63.0 percent (51-of-81) of his passes. The former
first-round pick has won four of his last five starts.
Buffalo will
continue to stick with rookie Trent Edwards, who has gone 1-1 in
place of the injured J.P. Losman. Although Losman's sprained
left knee has healed, Bills coach Dick Jauron chose to stick
with Edwards for now. Edwards has completed 76.3 percent
(45-of-59) of his passes in his two starts, but the offense
sputtered two weeks ago in a crushing 25-24 loss to Dallas.
Buffalo forced six turnovers, yet gave up nine points in the
final 20 seconds, losing on a last-second field goal for the
second time this season. The Bills had to go through their bye
last week with the loss still lingering in their minds. Just
like Baltimore, the Bills have injuries at several key positions
and are the only team in the NFL starting a rookie quarterback
and running back.
Buffalo is off to
a 1-4 start for the third time since 2001 and has a long way to
go to try to end a playoff drought that stretches to 1999. A
more productive offense would be a start after the team managed
only three offensive points in the loss to the Cowboys, despite
the defense recording five interceptions for just the second
time since 1970. Baltimore is 4-2 for the third time in the last
four seasons and would love to get another win heading into the
bye. Cornerback Chris McAlister missed Wednesday's practice and
is doubtful with a knee injury. Tight end Todd Heap saw limited
action in practice. He left during the first half of last
Sunday's win with a hamstring injury.

Pittsburgh Steelers
(4-1) At Denver Broncos (2-3)
Date & Time:
October 21, Sunday, 8:15 p.m.
The Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver
Broncos are hoping for very different things coming out of their
respective bye weeks. The Steelers look to continue where they
left off before the break, while the Broncos hope they have put
their worst home loss in over 40 years behind them when the
teams meet Sunday night in Denver. Pittsburgh (5-1) sits atop
the AFC North, and while it hasn't received the attention that
the undefeated New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts have,
that's fine with Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. Tomlin has to feel
confident after his players received some much needed rest.
Hines Ward (sprained knee), Troy Polamalu (abdomen) and Santonio
Holmes (hamstring) are all expected to play this weekend after
missing the Steelers' previous game against the Seattle
Seahawks.
Ward would be
returning after missing the previous two games. The return of
Ward and Holmes will boost an already dangerous Steelers'
offense, giving it more options down field while also opening up
the running game. Pittsburgh had 342 yards of total offense in a
21-0 win over the Seahawks two weeks ago, limiting Seattle to
144 yards.
While the
Steelers are trying to continue the success they had before the
bye week, Denver (2-3) is trying to end a three-game losing
streak. The Broncos entered their week off on the heels of a
41-3 loss to the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers had 484 yards
of total offense and handed Denver its worst loss at home since
1966.
Bailey and the
Broncos are trying to find some answers on defense. They have
the worst rushing defense in the league, although they also own
the league's best defense against the pass, allowing 145.6 yards
per game. Bailey was bothered in practice by a strained left
quadriceps, but expects to play this weekend. The Broncos'
schedule doesn't get much easier after Sunday's game. They play
the NFC North-leading Green Bay Packers next Monday before going
on the road to face Detroit and Kansas City.
Pittsburgh has
the second-ranked rushing offense in the league, averaging 167.0
yards per game, and is averaging 26.4 points per game. The
Steelers face a Denver team that is allowing 187.6 rushing yards
per game, a number that excites Willie Parker, who is averaging
101.4 yards to rank fourth among NFL rushers.
While Parker is
quick to credit the offense with the Steelers' success, the
defense should probably get some as well. Pittsburgh's opponents
are averaging a league-low 235.6 yards per game and have yet to
score a first-half touchdown this season. The 47 points
Pittsburgh has allowed in five games is its fewest yielded to
this point in 70 years. A win would improve the Steelers to 5-1
for only the second time in 10 years and first time since 2004.
Pittsburgh has won four of its last six games following a bye
week. Tomlin said he wasn't worried that the week off would
cause them to lose their momentum.
