Army Black Knights (3-3)At Central
Michigan Chippewas (3-3)
Date & Time:
October 13, Saturday, 3:30 p.m.
Searching for their first win
away from home this season, the Army Black Knights take a
shot at the Central Michigan Chippewas in a non-conference
affair at Kelly/Shorts Stadium this weekend. The Black
Knights have won all three of their games at home thus far
in 2007, keeping that mark unblemished with a 20-17 overtime
triumph versus Tulane last Saturday night. The victory was
the second in a row for Army, a program that has two wins on
overtime already this season.
As for the Chippewas, they too
have split their first six games of the campaign, outlasting
Ball State on the road last weekend, 58-38. CMU has to be
sure it can continue to compete outside of Mount Pleasant
because the team will be playing its next three in a row in
hostile environments, with just one more game this season
coming at home (November 16th vs. Eastern Michigan). The
Chippewas lead the all-time series with Army by a count of
1-0, thanks to a 14-10 triumph in 2005.

#18 Illinois Fighting Illini (5-1)At Iowa Hawkeyes (2-4)
Date & Time:
October 13, Saturday, 12:00 p.m.
The 18th-ranked Illinois
Fighting Illini have started 3-0 in Big Ten play for the
first time since 1990, and they will attempt to score
another league victory this weekend against the Iowa
Hawkeyes. Last weekend, Illinois posted a thrilling 31-26
victory over then fifth-ranked Wisconsin, ending the
nation's longest winning streak at 14 games. Two weeks ago,
the Illini beat Penn State for their first win over a ranked
opponent since 2001, and back-to- back triumphs over ranked
foes suggests that this team is a legitimate Big Ten title
contender. The lone loss thus far came against an
outstanding Missouri team by six points on the road.
As for Iowa, it has won 28 of
its last 33 games at Kinnick Stadium dating back to the 2002
campaign. Unfortunately, the Hawkeyes are just 2-4 overall
this season, including 0-3 against Big Ten opposition.
The club is riding a four-game
skid that includes a 27-7 loss to the same Penn State team
that the Illini beat. Illinois holds a 37-28-2 series lead
over Iowa, but the Hawkeyes have won the last four meetings.

Oregon State Beavers (3-3)At #2 California Golden Bears
(5-0)
Date & Time:
October 13, Saturday, 7:00 p.m.
Thanks to a USC loss last week,
Jeff Tedford's California Golden Bears have moved up to the
second spot in the national polls. The last time the team
was ranked higher than number two was way back in 1951. The
Bears will put that lofty ranking and an unblemished 5-0
record on the line this weekend, when they play host to the
Oregon State Beavers in Pac-10 play from Berkeley. The
Golden Bears have opened league play at 2-0 and passed a
huge test on September 29th when they defeated a tough
Oregon program, 31-24.
The Beavers on the other hand
are a disappointing 1-2 in league play, getting that first
victory last week against Arizona (31-16), halting a
two-game skid for OSU, which is just 3-3 on the year
overall. The last time that Oregon State won a road game
against a team ranked this high in the polls, came back in
1967 (22-14 win over second-ranked Purdue). California holds
a 33-26 edge in the all-time series. The Bears have won two
of the last three matchups, but the Beavers have won six of
the last eight overall.

Air Force Falcons
(4-2) At Colorado State Rams (0-5)
Date & Time:
October 13, Saturday, 5:30 p.m.
Trying to hide the fact that
they are tied for the nation's second- longest losing streak
entering play this week, the Colorado State Rams welcome the
Air Force Falcons to Hughes Stadium for a Mountain West
Conference showdown. The Rams, who have dropped 12 straight
contests overall, have also fallen in eight consecutive
league bouts and are losers of five straight at home. Last
weekend CSU came close, but not close enough in what was a
24-20 loss to San Diego State at home.
While Colorado State is dead
last in the MWC standings at 0-2 in conference play and 0-5
overall this season, Air Force actually has more MWC wins
than anyone with three in four tries. The Falcons went from
winning three in a row to begin 2007 to suffering
back-to-back setbacks to both BYU and Navy on the road. Last
week the team settled in on their own field and took care of
business against UNLV in a 31-14 decision. The Falcons
currently own a 25-19-1 edge in the all-time series with
Colorado State, thanks to a narrow 24-21 decision in last
year's meeting.

New Mexico State Aggies (3-3)At Louisiana
Tech Bulldogs (1-4)
Date & Time:
October 13, Saturday, 7:00 p.m.
A couple of programs searching
for their first Western Athletic Conference wins of the
season collide in Ruston this weekend, as the Louisiana Tech
Bulldogs play host to the New Mexico State Aggies at Aillet
Stadium. LaTech won the season opener against Central
Arkansas by three touchdowns, but since then nothing has
come easy. The squad has dropped four in a row, including a
24-0 decision against Ole Miss on the road last Saturday.
Since putting up 44 points in an overtime loss to Hawaii the
second week of the season, LaTech has tallied a combined 18
points over the last three games.
As for the Aggies, they've
alternated wins and losses since 2007 began with a 35-14
thrashing of Southeastern Louisiana at home in Las Cruces.
In a special Sunday night engagement, NMSU was knocked for a
loop by Boise State on the blue turf in a 58-0 debacle.
Except for having scored 20 points against both Auburn and
Arkansas-Pine Bluff in back-to-back outings, the Aggies have
scored fewer points in each game as the season wears on.
Although New Mexico State has never won in Ruston prior to
this meeting, the Aggies still own a 4-2 advantage in the
all-time series with LaTech.

Texas A&M Aggies (5-1)
At Texas Tech Red Raiders (5-1)
Date & Time:
October 13, Saturday, 3:30 p.m.
The two top teams in the Big 12
South Division meet in Lubbock, as the Texas Tech Red
Raiders welcome the Texas A&M Aggies to Jones SBC Stadium.
Texas A&M tied its largest comeback ever last weekend by
erasing a 17-point deficit to knock off Oklahoma State,
24-23. At 5-1 overall, the Aggies are getting an increasing
number of votes for the Top-25. They have won all five of
their home games, while their lone road contest was an
uninspiring loss to Miami.
The Aggies now find themselves
playing on the road against a Texas Tech team that has yet
to lose in three home games this season. Behind second-year
quarterback Graham Harrell, the Red Raiders boast the
nation's top offense in terms of total yards. And after a
42-17 dismantling of Iowa State last weekend,
Texas Tech enters this tilt
with plenty of confidence. The Aggies hold a 34-30-1 edge in
the head-to-head series, although Texas Tech has won the
last two meetings, and nine of the last 12 overall.

#11 Missouri
Tigers (5-0) At #6
Oklahoma Sooners (5-1)
Date & Time:
October 6, Saturday, 6:30 p.m.
A Big 12 showdown will ensue
in Norman this weekend, as the sixth- ranked Oklahoma
Sooners play host to the 11th-ranked Missouri Tigers.
Missouri has won its first five games this season,
including last weekend's 41-6 romp over a strong Nebraska
squad. The 35-point margin of victory over the Huskers was
the greatest for Mizzou in this series since 1947. The
Tigers also beat Illinois in week one, and the Illini are
now ranked and undefeated in Big Ten play.
This
weekend's game, however, figures to be the toughest test
yet. Oklahoma crushed the first four teams on its
schedule, and after a shocking loss to Colorado to fall to
4-1, the Sooners got back on track with a 28-21 decision
over arch-rival Texas last weekend. The remaining schedule
is quite favorable for Bob Stoops' club, as this weekend's
tilt and a late matchup with Texas A&M will both take
place at home. Oklahoma owns a commanding 63-23-5
advantage in the all-time series with Missouri, including
wins in 16 of the last 17 meetings.

BYU
Cougars (3-2) At UNLV Rebels
(2-4)
Date & Time: October 13,
Saturday, 9:30 p.m.
The BYU Cougars shoot for their third
straight win this weekend as they drop in on the UNLV Rebels for a
Mountain West Conference showdown at Sam Boyd Stadium in Sin City.
On the road for the second game in a row, BYU was actually off last
week after defeating New Mexico in Albuquerque by a score of 31-24
back on September 29th. The win followed a 31-6 triumph against Air
Force, which now has the Cougars slated first in the MWC standings.
As for the Rebels, they've fallen in
two straight and four of the last five outings now, after going down
to the Falcons in a 31-14 decision last Saturday on the road. The
only two wins for UNLV this season have come against programs from
the state of Utah (Utah State and Utah) so at least the squad has
that going in its favor this weekend. The Cougars lead the all-time
series with UNLV by a count of 11-3 and have won all six meetings
played in Las Vegas over the years.
Last season BYU completely dominated the Rebels in a 52-7 decision
at home, and yet four of the last seven contests have still been
decided by a touchdown or less.

Miami
Dolphins (0-5) At Cleveland Browns (2-3)
Date & Time: October 14,
Sunday, 1:00 p.m.
The Miami Dolphins
are on the verge of establishing franchise marks for futility, and
they will be without their starting quarterback for an indefinite
period of time. After Trent Green suffered a severe concussion last
week that may end his career, the Dolphins will turn to Cleo Lemon
as they look for their first win when they visit the Cleveland
Browns on Sunday.
Miami, the AFC's only
winless team at 0-5, is one loss away from matching the worst start
in team history, set in 2004. Including three defeats to end last
season, the Dolphins have dropped eight straight to tie the longest
skid in franchise history, previously established in 1967. The
Dolphins hope Lemon is in the latter group. He is their most
experienced option at quarterback, having played in five career
games - including one start last season. Rookie John Beck, a
second-round pick out of Brigham Young, has yet to attempt a pass.
Lemon replaced Green,
37, after he suffered a grade-three concussion while making a low
block on Houston defensive tackle Travis Johnson with 3:54 left in
the first quarter of a 22-19 road loss last Sunday. Lemon completed
15 of 27 passes for 151 yards with an interception, and the Dolphins
lost when Kris Brown made a last-second, 57-yard field goal. Lemon's
only start occurred on Dec. 31, when he completed 18 of 36 passes
for 210 yards with a touchdown and an interception in a 27-22 defeat
at Indianapolis. He will be facing a Browns team that has allowed an
NFL-leading 15 passing touchdowns and the second-most yards through
the air at 1,335.
At least the Dolphins
have proved they can run the ball. Ronnie Brown has rushed for at
least 100 yards in each of his last three games, a span in which he
has totaled 360 yards and four TDs on 61 carries. Cleveland (2-3),
meanwhile, has surrendered 787 rushing yards, the third-most in the
NFL. While the Dolphins have allowed the second-most rushing yards
at 871, they gave up a season-low 74 on 28 carries last Sunday after
linebacker Zach Thomas returned from a concussion that had sidelined
him for two weeks.
Miami may continue to
improve its rush defense totals if Cleveland's Jamal Lewis can't
play. Lewis has a sprained right foot that limited him to only one
carry during a 34-17 loss last Sunday at New England. Lewis has 381
yards on 85 carries in four games against the Dolphins, including
167 yards and a score on 34 attempts when he last faced Miami with
Baltimore on Jan. 2, 2005.
The Browns have
established their passing game, with Braylon Edwards registering 485
receiving yards and Kellen Winslow having 416, fourth and seventh,
respectively, in the NFL. Derek Anderson, though, has thrown eight
interceptions, tying him with Dallas' Tony Romo for second in the
league. Anderson may not be able to throw to Joe Jurevicius this
week as he battles a knee injury.
Cleveland native Ted
Ginn Jr., the Dolphins' first-round pick, looks to break out in his
homecoming. Ginn has only two receptions for 51 yards and is
averaging 7.0 yards on nine punt returns. The Dolphins had won six
straight against the Browns before losing 22-0 in the last meeting
on Nov. 20, 2005 at Cleveland. The Browns are trying to win three
straight home games for the first time since Sept. 12-Oct. 17, 2004.

New
England Patriots
(5-0) At Dallas Cowboys (5-0)
Date & Time: October 14,
Sunday, 4:15 p.m.
Although the Super
Bowl doesn't take place for another four months, a very rare
matchup between 5-0 teams from opposite conferences has stirred
talk of that game this week. The New England Patriots look to
match the best start in franchise history Sunday when they face
the Dallas Cowboys - one of the NFL's two other unbeaten teams -
at Texas Stadium.
This is only the
fifth time in league history that two undefeated teams with five
or more wins will face each other. The 5-0 Patriots beat the 5-0
New York Jets 13-7 on Oct. 24, 2004 in the most recent matchup.
While it may be hard to avoid talk of this being a potential Super
Bowl preview, most of the players are quick to downplay any such
notion. There will be only two unbeaten teams remaining late
Sunday because 5-0 Indianapolis has a bye this week. Making this
game even more intriguing is the manner in which the teams have
reached this point.
The Patriots have
dominated their first five opponents, scoring at least 34 points
and winning by 17 or more in each game. They have trailed only
once this season and that was for 12 minutes, 36 seconds against
Buffalo on Sept. 23 before they reeled off 35 unanswered points in
a 38-7 victory. Sunday, though, will provide New England with by
far its toughest test of the season. The Patriots have wins over
the Jets, San Diego, Buffalo, Cincinnati and Cleveland - teams
with a combined 7-17 record. Although they remained perfect, the
Patriots weren't entirely pleased with their performance in
Sunday's 34-17 victory over Cleveland.
Tom Brady threw for
265 yards and three touchdowns while Sammy Morris rushed for 102
yards - the second straight game he has gone over the 100-yard
mark in place of injured starter Laurence Maroney. The Patriots,
though, had their smallest margin of victory, failed to score in a
quarter for the first time this season and were unable to get star
receiver Randy Moss involved in the offense consistently. Brady
tied Steve Young's NFL record with at least three TD passes in
each of the first five games of a season.
Moss was limited to
season lows of three receptions for 46 yards, and failed to catch
a touchdown for the first time in five games. Another subplot to
this heavily hyped matchup is the presence of Moss and Owens on
the same field. Besides being two of the best receivers of their
generation, they also are two of the league's most controversial
players whose reputations often overshadow their enormous ability.
Brady and Moss pace New England's second-ranked offense, which
trails only Dallas in total yardage. Both teams also possess
strong defenses, with the Patriots ranking second in yards allowed
(251.4) and the Cowboys eighth (285.4).
A victory Sunday by
the Patriots would match the Super Bowl-winning 2004 team for the
most consecutive wins to open a season in franchise history. This
game nearly lost some of its luster Monday night with Dallas
apparently headed for a surprising loss at Buffalo. The Cowboys,
however, scored nine points in the final 20 seconds and pulled out
a wild 25-24 victory on rookie Nick Folk's 53-yard field goal as
time expired.
Most stunning was
Dallas even being in position to win after Tony Romo threw five
interceptions and lost a fumble. Two of Romo's picks were returned
for touchdowns in the first half, while his fumble and fifth
interception came during the fourth quarter. Romo - the NFC
offensive player of the month for September - had thrown 11
touchdowns and only three interceptions in his first four games
this season. Romo is second in the NFL in passing yards (1,508)
behind Brett Favre, one spot ahead of Brady, while ranking second
to Brady (16) in touchdown passes with 13. This is the first
meeting between the teams since New England posted a 12-0 victory
at home Nov. 16, 2003.
