Nebraska Cornhuskers (1-0)At Wake Forest Demon Deacons (0-1)
Date & Time:
September 8, Saturday, 12:00 p.m.
The 16th-ranked Nebraska
Cornhuskers will attempt to keep the momentum going this
weekend, as they travel to Winston-Salem for a non- conference
showdown with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Nebraska was
impressive in its season debut last week against Nevada,
blowing out the Wolf Pack by a score of 52-10.
It extended the nation's longest
streak for consecutive season-opening wins to 22. The week
continues to get better for Nebraska coach Bill Callahan, who
accepted a new five-year contract on Tuesday, keeping him in
Lincoln through the 2012 season. Callahan's troops will face a
different challenge this week than the one last week, as the
Demon Deacons are in desperate need of a victory after
dropping a 38-28 decision to Boston College in the
season-opener in Chestnut Hill.
After winning the ACC a year ago, Jim Grobe's troops were
hoping for a better start to their 2007 campaign. This is the
third-all-time meeting between these two
teams, with Nebraska winning the
previous two matchups, including a 31-3 rout in 2005.

Boise State Broncos (1-0)At Washington Huskies (1-0)
Date & Time:
September 8, Saturday, 3:30 p.m.
Moving up to the 22nd spot in the
top-25 this week, the Boise State Broncos try to extend the
nation's longest winning streak this weekend when they drop in
on the Washington Huskies. Boise State wasted little time in
season-opener, blowing away Weber State last Thursday night by
a score of 56-7.
The victory extended the team's
win streak to 14 in a row, following the only undefeated 2006
campaign among I-A programs, now known
as the Football Bowl Subdivision.
As for the Huskies, they too won their first game of the
season last week, routing the Syracuse Orange in the Carrier
Dome by a final of 42-12.
This is the first of two games
that Washington will play against a member of the Western
Athletic Conference, with the team heading to Honolulu to
close out the regular season the first of December versus
high-flying Hawaii. This game marks the first-ever meeting
between these two schools on the gridiron.

South Carolina Gamecocks (1-0)At #11 Georgia Bulldogs (1-0)
Date & Time:
September 8, Saturday, 5:45 p.m.
SEC foes will duke it out in
Athens this weekend as the 11th- ranked Georgia Bulldogs host
the South Carolina Gamecocks. South Carolina opened the season
last Saturday with a 28-14 victory over UL- Lafayette. That
victory was the 15th straight in a collegiate opener by head
coach Steve Spurrier. The schedule is unmerciful, as the
Gamecocks will face LSU, Tennessee and Arkansas on the road in
addition to home games against Florida, Kentucky and Clemson.
Georgia got off to an outstanding
start with a 35-14 home victory over the Oklahoma State
Cowboys of the Big 12. Last season, the Bulldogs were not in
contention for the SEC title,
unacceptable for a program which
expects excellence year in and year out. The early schedule
this season is rather soft, so the 'Dawgs have an opportunity
to get off to a tremendous start. Georgia owns a commanding
44-13-2 advantage in the all-time series with South Carolina,
including an 18-0 victory over the Gamecocks a year ago.

Force Falcons (1-0) At Utah Utes (0-1)
Date & Time:
September 8, Saturday, 6:00 p.m.
Wasting little time before
getting into the Mountain West Conference schedule, the Utah
Utes welcome the Air Force Falcons to Salt Lake City and
Rice-Eccles Stadium this weekend. Utah opened play in 2007
last Thursday night and was consequently dropped by Oregon
State on the road in Corvallis, 24-7, amid crucial injuries at
both running back and quarterback for the visitors.
As for the Falcons, they posted
their largest opening-day victory since a 49-0 blanking of
Wofford in 2003, with a 34-3 decision against South Carolina
State at home on Saturday. The victory was the first for new
head coach Troy Calhoun, who took over for the legendary
Fisher DeBerry. In terms
of the all-time series between the programs, Air Force holds a
three- game lead over the Utes at 13-10, but it was Utah that
captured last year's event with a 17-14 decision. With that
victory, the Utes have taken four in a row from the academy.

Kent State Golden Flashes (1-0)At Kentucky Wildcats (1-0)
Date & Time:
September 8, Saturday, 6:00 p.m.
The Kent State Golden Flashes
have a wealth of confidence on their side, and they will need
every ounce of it in this weekend's non-conference road clash
with the Kentucky Wildcats. Last Thursday, Kent State beat
Iowa State by a 23-14 final on the road, the program's first
win at a BCS school since 1987.
The Golden Flashes finished 1-10
in 2005 and took a step forward last season, so the fact that
they were able to knock off a Big 12 program to open this new
campaign is evidence that things are certainly headed in the
right direction.
A second straight road victory
over a team from an elite conference would force the nation to
take notice. Kentucky made a statement in its opener by
rolling to a 50-10 victory over Eastern Kentucky. The
Wildcats, who were vastly improved last season under head
coach Rich Brooks, have a
game against rival Louisville looming next weekend. The hope
is that the 'Cats will not look past the Golden Flashes on
Saturday. Kentucky has won all five previous meetings with
Kent State, but the teams have not squared off since 1993.

South Florida Bulls (1-0) At #17 Auburn Tigers (1-0)
Date & Time:
September 8, Saturday, 9:00 p.m.
The South Florida Bulls of the
Big East Conference are set to take on the 17th-ranked Auburn
Tigers of the SEC. South Florida beat Elon by a 28-13 final to
open the season, and while the performance wasn't exactly
spectacular, the Bulls were simply happy to get a win under
their belts. After this weekend's clash,
the club will return to Tampa for
back-to-back home games against North Carolina and national
powerhouse West Virginia. Jim Leavitt deserves a ton of credit
for the way he has built the USF program in a short time, as
the 9-4 finish in 2006 served notice that the Bulls have
arrived.
As for Auburn, it rallied from a
13-9 deficit to beat Kansas State by a 23-13 final, giving the
program its first victory when trailing after three quarters
in nearly three years. The Tigers are 12-1 in home night games
since the start of the 2000 season, and the program has posted
a 34-5 record over the past four seasons. This game marks the
first-ever meeting between the Bulls and the Tigers on the
gridiron.

Ragin' Cajuns (0-1)
Date & Time:
September 8, Saturday, 7:00 p.m.
The UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns
will attempt to collect their first victory of the season when
they host the Ohio University Bobcats this Saturday evening at
Cajun Field. The Bobcats are coming off a convincing, 36-14
victory over Gardner-Webb this past Saturday. If the Bobcats
are victorious, it will be
the second consecutive season that Ohio opened its campaign
with a 2-0 ledger.
As for the Cajuns, they opened
their 2007 season with a tough, 28-14 road loss to South
Carolina. ULL has not had much success against MAC opponents
in the past, as the team
is just 2-5 all-time versus schools from the Mid-American
Conference. Including Saturday's contest, the Cajuns will have
the luxury of a three-game homestand. In regard to the
all-time series between the two schools on the gridiron, this
will be the first-ever meeting.

(0-1) At Arkansas State Indians
(0-1)
Date & Time: September 8,
Saturday, 7:00 p.m.
A pair of teams looking for their first
win of the season hook up in Jonesboro, as the Arkansas State Indians
welcome the Memphis Tigers to Indian Stadium for a non-conference
bout. Memphis opened its season with a 23-21 loss at home to Ole Miss.
The Tigers drew to within two in the
final 31 seconds but failed to convert
the game-tying two-point attempt. They will have to clean up some
sloppy play, as the Tigers committed five costly turnovers in the
game.
Arkansas State fought tooth and nail with
fourth-ranked Texas, though the Longhorns came away with a 21-13
victory. The Indians were able to move the ball, actually out-gaining
the Longhorns in total offense,
but they could not translate that yardage into touchdowns. Against
Memphis, the Indians must do a better job in the red zone and on third
downs. The Tigers hold a 27-21-5 edge in the head-to-head series,
although Arkansas State won last year's meeting to snap a 10-game skid
against Memphis.

Carolina
Panthers (0-0) At St. Louis Rams (0-0)
Date & Time: September 9,
Sunday, 1:00 p.m.
The expectations aren't nearly
as high as they were a year ago, but the Carolina Panthers sound
optimistic. They'll be hoping to avoid the kind of disappointment that
marred their 2006 campaign Sunday when they kick off the season
against the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome.Carolina entered
last season as a favorite to reach the Super Bowl, but stumbled to an
8-8 record and failed to even reach the playoffs.
An anemic offense was largely to blame, as the
Panthers ranked last in the league with a 31.1 third-down conversion
percentage, 14th in the NFC with and average of 321.6 yards from
scrimmage and 13th in the conference with just 103.7 rushing yards.
Delhomme missed three games with a thumb injury and threw six
fourth-quarter interceptions, while Steve Smith, who led the league
with 1,563 receiving yards in 2005, missed the first two games with a
hamstring injury - both losses - and saw his numbers decline.
Hoping to jump start their offense, the Panthers
fired offensive coordinator Dan Henning and brought in Jeff Davidson,
who is focusing the offense on getting the ball to Smith. He also
brought in a zone-blocking scheme designed to improve the team's
rushing.Smith, who signed a three-year contract extension in May that
makes him one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL, has even
mentioned 2,000 receiving yards as a goal for the season.
Receiver Keyshawn Johnson, who was expected to open
up more opportunities for Smith, was let go in the offseason, and
Keary Colbert, who had five catches last season, will take over as the
No. 2 receiver while rookie Dwayne Jarrett progresses. The Panthers
also signed former Houston quarterback David Carr, who will be ready
to take over if Delhomme continues to struggle.
But despite all the changes, Carolina's offense was
inconsistent in the preseason, scoring only one touchdown in the final
three games. The Panthers' defense ranked second overall in the NFC
with 296.1 yards allowed per game last season, but allowed opponents
to rush for at least 100 yards in nine games. It also enters this
season with a number of question marks, particularly in the
secondary.Cornerbacks Ken Lucas and Chris Gamble are coming off subpar
seasons, and veteran safety Mike Minter abruptly retired in training
camp with sore knees. The other projected starting safety, Nate Salley,
has been bothered by a knee injury.
In addition, middle linebacker Dan Morgan has played
in only one preseason game as he slowly returns from multiple
concussions, and another one could potentially end his career. The
Panthers, who are opening on the road for the first time since 2001,
do have a relatively easy early schedule on their side - playing
Houston, Atlanta and Tampa Bay after their opener. The Panthers are
hoping to get off to a quick start against a team they dominated last
season. They beat St. Louis 15-0 on Nov. 19 in Charlotte, sacking
quarterback Marc Bulger seven times and rushing for a team-record 242
yards.
The Panthers held St. Louis
running back Stephen Jackson to just 27 rushing and 30 receiving
yards, but that performance was hardly indicative of Jackson's season.
He led the NFL with 2,334 yards rushing and receiving last year and
figures to be fresh for this game after finishing the preseason with
just two receptions and no carries.
Jackson will lead an offense that ranked third in
the NFC with both 383.3 scrimmage yards and 247.6 passing yards per
game last season. Bulger is coming off his second Pro Bowl, and Drew
Bennett - Tennessee's leader in receptions the past two seasons -
joins a receiving corps that already features veteran stars Torry Holt
and Issac Bruce.
Holt has seven straight 1,000-yard seasons but is
coming off knee surgery. The first-team offense didn't score any
touchdowns during the preseason, but offensive coordinator Greg Olson,
who took over play-calling duties after last season's loss to the
Panthers, isn't concerned.
The defense is the biggest concern for St. Louis,
which ranked second-to-last in the NFL with 145.4 rushing yards
allowed per game and 13th in the NFC with 23.8 points allowed. The
Rams made a few upgrades, including the addition of defensive James
Hall from Detroit to complement star end Leonard Little, and are
hoping that the team is more comfortable in its second year under
defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.

Miami
Dolphins (0-0) At Washington Redskins (0-0)
Date & Time: September
9, Sunday, 1:00 p.m.
The Miami Dolphins
got a new coach and quarterback in hopes of ending the longest
playoff drought in franchise history. The Washington Redskins are
sticking with their Hall of Fame coach and young signal-caller to
bounce back from a disappointing season. After failing to meet
expectations last year, both squads try to get off to good starts
when they meet Sunday at FedEx Field.
Miami finished 6-10
under Nick Saban in 2006 to miss the playoffs for the fifth
straight season, the longest stretch in the team's 41-year
history. That's also the fourth-longest current drought among NFL
teams that have appeared in the postseason. The Dolphins have gone
36 consecutive years without posting back-to-back losing seasons,
the longest run among all teams in the four major sports. They
were streaky last year, losing six of their first seven games and
their final three of the season around a 5-1 stretch. While Miami
finished fourth in the AFC East for the second time in three
seasons, Washington was last in the NFC East with a 5-11 mark. It
was the worst record in coach Joe Gibbs' 15 seasons with the
Redskins.
Their struggles
were especially humbling after they had gone 10-6 in 2005 - Gibbs'
second season back as coach - and made the playoffs for the first
time since 1999. Washington quarterback Jason Campbell, who took
over for the benched Mark Brunell for the final seven games last
year, said his team doesn't want a repeat of 2006. Miami hopes it
won't have to either after signing new coach Cam Cameron to a
four-year contract in January. Cameron spent the last five seasons
as San Diego's offensive coordinator, leading the Chargers to the
best scoring average (30.6) in the NFL in 2006 while the Dolphins
(16.3) were 29th.He'll try to bring that offensive expertise to a
young squad that features nine drafted players - the most to make
the team in 10 years.
The Dolphins
acquired Green in June and Cameron decided to go with him instead
of Daunte Culpepper, who struggled in his return from knee surgery
and was released in July. Green, who spent the previous six
seasons with Kansas City, had trouble overcoming his own injury
last season. The 37-year-old Green sustained a severe concussion
in the 2006 season opener and made only eight starts, throwing for
1,342 yards, seven TDs and nine interceptions. Green had started
every game for the Chiefs from 2001 to 2005 and thrown for more
than 4,000 yards three years in a row.Since 2000, the Dolphins
have used 10 different starting quarterbacks, third-most in the
NFL, while the Redskins have used nine, which is tied for fourth.
Gibbs is counting
on Campbell to improve after he went 2-5 in those final seven
games of 2006, completing 53.1 percent of his passes for 1,297
yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. The 2005 first-round
draft pick will be backed up by Todd Collins while Brunell is
third-string. Campbell's top targets will be receiver Santana
Moss, whose 16.2 yards per reception during his career is tops
among active players, and tight end Chris Cooley, who had a
team-high 57 catches last season for 734 yards and six touchdowns.
Injuries limited
running back Clinton Portis to seven starts last season, and this
year he'll try to overcome a bothersome knee. Ladell Betts filled
in admirably in 2006 with 770 rushing yards over the final six
games, second-most in the NFL during that stretch. Getting off to
a strong start in 2007 may be tough against a Miami defense that
ranked fourth in the NFL in yards allowed last season (289.1) and
fifth in points (17.7).
Porter will be a
strong addition after spending his first eight seasons in
Pittsburgh. The linebacker underwent arthroscopic surgery on his
right knee Aug. 7 and missed much of training camp, but feels
better every day and expects to play Sunday. The Redskins defense
ranked last in interceptions (six), sacks (19) and passer rating
(97.8) last season. Their 12 takeaways were the fewest by any team
in a 16-game season.
Washington signed
free-agent middle linebacker London Fletcher in the offseason to
quarterback its struggling unit. He has started 103 consecutive
games and has never missed a game during his NFL career, spanning
144 contests. Washington's bolstered defense also includes
free-agent cornerbacks Fred Smoot and David Macklin along with
first-round pick LaRon Landry. The Dolphins lead the
regular-season series with the Redskins 6-3, including a 24-23
victory in their last matchup Nov. 23, 2003, and are 4-0 in
meetings in Miami. The teams have met twice in the Super Bowl,
with Miami winning in 1972 and Washington taking the title in 1982
