Draft Grade: C+
|
|
Looking to solidify the
secondary, San Diego
gambled on Antonio
Cromartie in round 1
with the 19th overall pick
despite the fact that
Cromartie started only one
game during his three-year
college career, which
included the '05 season
spent entirely on the
sidelines due to an ACL
injury. Still, Cromartie
has potential, and his 6-2
size, physical game and
sheer speed is a rare
blend. The acquisition of
Marcus McNeill in
round two was exceptional.
McNeill has first round
talent; his only knock is
lack of speed and slower
footwork. No problem. If
McNeill is exposed on the
end, he can easily move
inside and maul the
middle, opening up the run
lanes for L.T. San Diego
needed help everywhere up
front, so the versatility
of McNeill along with his
imposing 6-7, 335-pound
frame, will provide solid
dividends. With Rivers
taking over the offense,
and little else behind
him, drafting for depth
was critical, and San
Diego did well with
Charlie Whitehurst in
round three. He has the
size, arm strength and
potential to become the
next great backup ala Matt
Schaub. A very weak
showing on day two of the
Draft hurt San Diego's
overall grade. |
