Draft Grade: C

Surprisingly, Minnesota
failed to upgrade the
skill positions on offense
during the 2006 Draft.
Apparently they're content
with aging veteran Brad
Johnson at QB, career
backup Chester Taylor in
the full-time starting
role at RB, no TE, and
unproven Troy Williamson
and an average Travis
Taylor at WR. This offense
won't be anywhere near as
prolific as it was during
the Culpepper/Moss era.
Instead, the Vikes opted
to go with defense, draft
LB Chad Greenway in
round one and stretching
with the selection of CB
Cedric Griffin in
round two despite having
two proven stars in Smoot
and Winfield firmly
entrenched in the starting
roles. Center Ryan Cook
is a mauler who will
eventually take over for
veteran Matt Birk. Small
school QB Tarvaris
Jackson was a major
stretch in round two as
better, more capable QBs
were there for the taking.
DE Ray Edwards and
S Greg Blue are
very strong defenders who
should provide
better-than-average depth
for the Viking D. Overall,
Minnesota draft
exceptional talent (with
the exception of the reach
for Jackson in round two),
but not necessarily at the
needs that were most
important. |
