With major needs at OLB
and TE, the Bears could've
landed a talent like TE
Marcedes Lewis or LB
DeMeco Ryans, either of
which would have satisfied
their needs perfectly.
Instead, Chicago unwisely
opted to trade out of
round one altogether. But
why? Considering their
lack of free agent
shopping in recent years,
it couldn't be a financial
reason (not wanting to pay
first round money). After
trading out of round one,
the Bears apparently had
nothing up their sleeve.
Safety Danieal Manning
surprised everyone in the
room. Manning has talent,
we won't argue that, but
42nd overall? Unwise
stretch indeed. Chicago
redeemed themselves later
in the second stanza when
they tagged Devin
Hester, college
football's most prolific
return specialists. The
Bears need improved
special teams play and
Hester should be able to
ignite the return game.
The Bears are hoping he
can eventually blossom
into either a reliable CB
or WR. He certainly has
enough athleticism to do
so. The rest of the '06
Draft was a wash for
Chicago, but a sleeper
prospect we were high on
was in fact Arizona
State's Jamar Williams,
who can potentially fill
the OLB void next to
Urlacher and Briggs. |
