Young Alex Smith needs a
#1 target, and in a poor
WR class, San Fran wisely
opted to go with TE
Vernon Davis with
their 6th pick overall.
Davis, a blazer with
exceptional receiving
skills, should be able to
start as a rookie and
could quickly become San
Fran's most reliable
weapon offensively. After
landing Davis, San Fran
addressed critical needs
on defense, starting with
Manny Lawson, a
long, lean tackling
machine in the mold of
former 49er Julian
Peterson. Lawson, a 6-5,
240-pound DE in college,
fits the OLB role in San
Fran's 3-4 defense, but
replacing the productivity
of Peterson won't happen
overnight. Too many "ifs"
surround San Fran's Draft.
Will Lawson be able to
transition from college DE
to pro OLB successfully?
Same goes for Parys
Harralson. And what to
do with athlete Michael
Robinson, a QB at Penn
State too small to move to
the backfield in the NFL
and inexperienced as a
receiver? The 49ers are
taking baby steps through
the re-building process
and they'll need at least
two more quality drafts
before dividends start to
be recognized. |
